Preparation for Surgery
Preparing mentally and physically for surgery is an important step toward a successful result. Understanding the process and your role in it will help you recover more quickly and have fewer problems.
Pre-Operative Testing
- Prior to surgery, you will usually need additional imaging if computer guided or robotic surgery is being planned. In addition, routine blood tests, ECG and a chest X-ray will be required.
Medications
- Certain medications may affect your surgery, and wound healing. We will discuss your medications with you, and advise which ones will need to be ceased pre-operatively.
General Health
- It is recommended to optimise your health prior to any elective surgical procedure. Eating well leading up to surgery will improve your nutritional state.
- Smoking increases complications of surgery. Dr Gupta will usually recommend deferring any significant elective surgery until smoking has ceased, or significantly reduced.
- It is advisable to have any major dental issues addressed prior to surgery.
Prior to Surgery
- Leading up to surgery, the Anaesthetist will contact you to assess your medical status, and discuss the anaesthetic, and post-operative pain management.
- The Hospital will contact you the day prior to advise you of the admission and fasting time.
- Please bring all your medications and personal items with you to Hospital. Walking aids (crutches) will be provided after surgery.
- Phones and laptops can be used, and the Hospital provides free Wi-fi.
